Management training workshop in progress with engaged professionals

Management Training glossary and knowledge hub

Whether you are stepping into your first team-lead role or reshaping a department, our knowledge hub clarifies the language, frameworks, and competencies that underpin effective management development.

A

Active listening

A structured approach to receiving and interpreting verbal and non-verbal messages during one-to-one conversations, team meetings, and stakeholder discussions. Active listening demands suspending judgement, paraphrasing for clarity, and confirming understanding before responding. It is the foundation of every coaching conversation and conflict-resolution model we teach.

"After the active-listening module our 1-to-1 satisfaction scores rose by 29 %." — HR director, logistics firm, Midlands

Accountability framework

A documented system that maps each manager's responsibilities, decision rights, and escalation pathways. Our workshops help organisations build bespoke accountability frameworks that reduce bottlenecks and clarify ownership across cross-functional teams.

C

Coaching culture

An organisational environment where managers at every level use coaching techniques — open questioning, reflective feedback, and goal-setting — as their default leadership style rather than directive command. Building a coaching culture typically takes 6 to 18 months of sustained practice, peer observation, and structured review cycles.

Change readiness

The measurable capacity of a team or department to absorb, adapt to, and sustain organisational change. We assess change readiness through diagnostic interviews, pulse surveys, and scenario workshops before designing any transformation programme.

"The change-readiness diagnostic saved us from launching a restructure our teams weren't prepared for." — Operations lead, NHS trust

Conflict resolution

Structured methods for identifying, addressing, and resolving disagreements within teams. Our training covers interest-based negotiation, mediation fundamentals, and restorative conversation models that managers can apply the same week they learn them.

D

Delegation model

A tiered framework that helps managers decide what to delegate, to whom, and with what level of oversight. Our preferred model uses five delegation levels — from "tell me what to do" through to "act and inform" — giving managers a shared vocabulary for handing off work without losing accountability.

E

Emotional intelligence

The ability to recognise, understand, and regulate one's own emotions while perceiving and influencing the emotions of others. In management training, emotional intelligence is not treated as a personality trait but as a learnable skill set comprising self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, social skill, and motivation. Our programme uses video-based reflection and 360-degree feedback to accelerate growth in all five domains.

F

Feedback loop

A recurring cycle in which performance data is gathered, shared with the individual, discussed collaboratively, and used to set adjusted goals. Effective feedback loops operate weekly or fortnightly, not just at annual appraisal. We teach the SBI model (Situation-Behaviour-Impact) as the default structure for delivering constructive and reinforcing feedback.

"Switching to fortnightly SBI feedback halved our employee-relations cases in one quarter." — People partner, fintech start-up

I

Inclusive leadership

A leadership approach that actively seeks diverse perspectives, challenges unconscious bias, and creates psychological safety for all team members. Our inclusive-leadership module uses live case studies from UK workplaces and includes bias-interruption techniques managers can practise in pairs during the session.

P

Psychological safety

The shared belief within a team that it is safe to take interpersonal risks — asking questions, admitting mistakes, proposing unconventional ideas — without fear of punishment or ridicule. Research consistently links high psychological safety with better innovation outcomes and lower staff turnover. We measure it pre- and post-programme using a validated seven-item survey.

Performance calibration

A structured meeting in which managers compare and align their performance ratings across teams to reduce bias and ensure consistency. Our facilitation guide for calibration sessions has been adopted by organisations ranging from 50 to 3 000 employees.

S

Situational leadership

A model that encourages managers to flex their style — directing, coaching, supporting, or delegating — based on the competence and commitment of the individual they are leading. Rather than teaching a single "best" style, our programme helps managers diagnose development level quickly and match their approach in real time.

Stakeholder mapping

A visual technique for identifying every person or group affected by a decision, project, or change initiative, then plotting their influence and interest to prioritise engagement effort. We use a four-quadrant power-interest grid combined with relationship-quality scoring.

T

Team charter

A collaboratively written document that defines a team's purpose, operating norms, communication preferences, and decision-making rules. Creating a team charter is one of the first exercises in our new-manager programme because it surfaces expectations early and reduces friction later.

"Our team charter exercise uncovered misaligned expectations that had been causing silent conflict for months." — Department head, university

Why glossary-led learning works

Most management training fails because participants leave with enthusiasm but no shared language. When a manager says "I delegated that," their report may hear "I abandoned that." Anchoring development around a common glossary of terms, models, and expectations gives every conversation a stable foundation.

We embedded the glossary into our onboarding portal. Six months later, new managers were using the same vocabulary as their experienced peers — and performance-review consistency improved noticeably.— L&D manager, 400-person engineering consultancy

Our knowledge-hub approach is not just a reference tool. Each term links directly to a module, a practice exercise, or a diagnostic — turning passive reading into active skill-building.

Development pathways

Foundations pathway

For first-time managers and team leads. Covers delegation, feedback, time management, and one-to-one structure across four half-day sessions spread over two months.

Completed by 19 cohorts since 2020

Accelerator pathway

For managers with 2+ years of experience who need to sharpen coaching skills, navigate organisational politics, and lead through ambiguity. Six blended modules with peer-learning triads.

Senior leader intensive

A bespoke programme for directors and heads of function. Focuses on strategic decision-making, culture shaping, and executive presence. Delivered as a two-day residential followed by monthly coaching.

Net promoter score of 78 across the last eight cohorts

Team diagnostic and reset

Not a training course — a facilitated intervention. We diagnose team dynamics through interviews and observation, then design a half-day reset session that addresses the specific friction points holding the team back.

Is your organisation ready?

  1. Do your managers share a common language for feedback, delegation, and coaching — or does every manager invent their own approach?
  2. Can you name the three biggest capability gaps in your management population right now?
  3. Is management development linked to business outcomes such as retention, engagement scores, or project delivery — or is it a tick-box exercise?
  4. Do new managers receive structured support within their first 90 days, or are they left to figure it out?
  5. Are senior leaders modelling the behaviours you want middle managers to adopt?

If you answered "no" to two or more, a conversation with us will be worth your time.
